The Benefits of a Concrete Patio

Your backyard should be a space you enjoy using. A concrete patio gives you a solid, level surface for outdoor furniture, grilling, entertaining, or just relaxing. Unlike wood decks that require regular staining and maintenance, concrete patios need minimal upkeep while providing decades of reliable service.

Concrete does not rot, warp, or attract termites like wood. It handles sun exposure, rain, and temperature changes better than most outdoor materials. You will not need to worry about splinters, loose boards, or annual maintenance projects. A quick sweep or occasional pressure washing keeps your patio looking clean and ready to use.

The versatility of concrete makes it perfect for any backyard design. We can create patios in any shape or size to fit your space and needs. Whether you want a small sitting area or a large entertainment space, concrete adapts to your vision. You can also add decorative elements like colored concrete, stamped patterns, or textured finishes that match your home's style.

Concrete stays cooler than dark pavers in summer sun, making it more comfortable for bare feet. It provides excellent drainage when properly sloped, so you do not deal with standing water after rain. The solid surface is easier to keep clean than pavers with gaps where dirt and weeds can accumulate.

Design and Layout Options

Size and Shape

We work with you to design a patio that fits your space and how you plan to use it. A small patio might be perfect for a bistro table and chairs, while a larger space can accommodate full outdoor furniture sets, grills, and entertaining areas. We consider factors like sun exposure, views, access to your house, and natural traffic flow when planning the layout.

Concrete lets us create any shape you want. Rectangular patios are classic and efficient, but we can also form curved edges, circular designs, or irregular shapes that work around trees, gardens, or other landscape features. Multi-level patios add visual interest and can help manage slope in your yard.

Surface Finishes

The finish you choose affects both appearance and function. We offer several options:

  • Broom finish provides texture for slip resistance and a traditional look
  • Smooth trowel finish creates a sleek, modern appearance
  • Exposed aggregate reveals decorative stone in the concrete mix
  • Salt finish adds subtle texture without visible aggregate
  • Stamped patterns mimic stone, brick, tile, or wood

Color options include integral color mixed throughout the concrete or surface stains applied after installation. Decorative concrete techniques can create custom looks that make your patio a standout feature of your backyard. We show you samples and discuss how different finishes perform in outdoor conditions.

Installation Process and Timeline

Site Preparation

Proper preparation ensures your patio performs well for years. We excavate to the correct depth and create a stable base using compacted gravel. The patio must slope slightly away from your house for drainage. We install forms that define the shape and edges of your patio. This preparation work is critical and takes time to do correctly.

For most residential patios, we pour four inches of concrete over a compacted base. Reinforcement using wire mesh or rebar helps prevent cracking. We also install control joints that guide where minor cracks will form as the concrete naturally shrinks during curing.

Pour and Finish

The concrete pour happens in one continuous process. We place, spread, and level the concrete, then apply your chosen finish before it sets. Timing is important, so we plan pours carefully around weather conditions. After finishing, we apply curing compound to help the concrete develop proper strength.

Your new patio needs about seven days to cure before you can use it for furniture. Full strength develops over 28 days. Most patio projects from start to finish take one to two weeks depending on size and weather. We coordinate with you to minimize disruption to your daily routine. Existing concrete removal and disposal adds time if you are replacing an old patio.
